3.10

舉僧問風穴。語默涉離微。如何通不犯。穴云。長憶江南三月裏。鷓鴣啼處百花香。雪竇云。劈腹剜心。師云。露躶躶圓陀陀。直是無稜縫。且道。風穴無稜縫。何似雪竇無稜縫。還會麼。和光惹事。刮篤成家。

[The Master] cited a monk asking Fengxue: "Speech and silence involve transcendence and subtlety; how can one penetrate without transgression?" Xue said, "I constantly recall Jiangnan in the third month—where the partridges cry, the hundred flowers are fragrant." Xuedou said, "Splitting open the belly, gouging out the heart." The Master said, "Stark naked, brightly rounded, completely without seam or edge. Tell me, Fengxue had no seam or edge—how does that compare to Xuedou having no seam or edge? Do you understand? Blending with the light stirs up trouble; scraping clean founds a household."
