3.18

舉經云。若見諸相非相。即見如來。法眼云。若見諸相非相。即不見如來。師云。世尊說如來禪。法眼說祖師禪。會得甚奇特。不會也相許。

[The Master] cited the sūtra: "If one sees all characteristics as non-characteristics, one sees the Tathāgata." Fayan said, "If one sees all characteristics as non-characteristics, one does not see the Tathāgata." The Master said, "The World-Honoured One spoke of Tathāgata Chan; Fayan spoke of Patriarchal Chan. Understanding it is very extraordinary; not understanding it is also permitted."
