3.19

舉馬祖見僧來。便畫一圓相云。入也打不入也打。僧便入。祖便打。僧云。和尚打某甲不得。祖靠却拄杖休去。師云。跨門之機。室中之意。具眼者分明辨取。

[The Master] cited Mazu: seeing a monk come, he immediately drew a circle and said, "Enter and I strike; do not enter and I strike." The monk entered immediately. Mazu struck immediately. The monk said, "The Master cannot strike me." Mazu set down his staff and ceased. The Master said, "The function of straddling the threshold, the intent within the room—those with eyes should discern it clearly."
