3.30

舉溈山與仰山摘茶次。溈云。終日祇聞子聲。不見子形。仰便撼茶樹。溈云。子祇得其用。仰云未審。和尚如何。溈良久。仰云。和尚祇得其體。溈云。放子三十棒。師云。溈山仰山。父父子子。叢林盡道。各得一橛。殊不知天共白雲曉。水和明月秋。

[The Master] cited Guishan and Yangshan picking tea: Gui said, "All day I only hear your voice, but do not see your form." Yang then shook the tea tree. Gui said, "You have only attained its function." Yang said, "I wonder, what about the Master?" Gui remained silent for a long time. Yang said, "The Master has only attained its essence." Gui said, "I spare you thirty blows." The Master said, "Guishan and Yangshan, father and son. Everyone in the monastic grove says each attained one end. Little do they know: the sky shares the white clouds at dawn; the water blends with the bright moon in autumn."
