3.45

舉石鞏上堂。乃張弓架箭。三平擘開胸當之。鞏云。一張弓兩隻箭。三十年祇。射得半箇聖人。師云。石鞏習氣不除。三平相席打令。却云三十年一張弓兩隻箭。祇射得半箇聖人。豈不是以己方人。大都不入驚人浪。到了難尋稱意魚。

[The Master] cited: Shigong ascended the hall, drew his bow and notched an arrow. Sanping bared his chest to face it. Shigong said: “One bow and two arrows, in thirty years only shooting half a sage.”
The Master said: “Shigong's habit energy was not eliminated; Sanping followed the table and gave the drinking rules, yet said: ‘In thirty years, one bow and two arrows only shot half a sage.’ Is this not measuring others by oneself? In general, if one does not enter the startling waves, in the end it is hard to find the satisfying fish.”
