3.50

舉芭蕉示眾云。爾有拄杖子。我與爾拄杖子。爾無拄杖子。我奪却爾拄杖子。師云。爾有則一切有。爾無則一切無。有無自是當人。與奪關芭蕉甚事。正恁麼時。作麼生是爾拄杖子。

[The Master] cited: Bajiao instructed the assembly, saying: “If you have a staff, I give you a staff; if you have no staff, I snatch away your staff.”
The Master said: “If you have it, then everything has it; if you have it not, then everything has it not. Having and not having belong naturally to the person in question; what do giving and taking have to do with Bajiao? Just at such a moment, what is your staff?”
