3.51

舉僧問香嚴。如何是道。嚴云。枯木裡龍吟。僧云。如何是道中人。嚴云。髑髏裡眼睛。僧舉門石霜。如何是枯木裡龍吟。霜云。猶帶喜在。僧云。如何是髑髏裡眼睛。霜云。猶帶識在。師云。王居門裡。臣不出門。

[The Master] cited: A monk asked Xiangyan: “What is the Way?” Xiangyan said: “A dragon humming in a withered tree.” The monk said: “What is the person within the Way?” Xiangyan said: “Eyes in a skull.” The monk cited this to ask Shishuang: “What is a dragon humming in a withered tree?” Shishuang said: “It still carries joy.” The monk said: “What are eyes in a skull?” Shishuang said: “They still carry consciousness.”
The Master said: “The king dwells inside the gate; the minister does not go outside the gate.”
