舉南泉歸宗麻谷。禮拜忠國師。泉於路上畫一圓相云。道得即去。宗於圓相中坐。谷作女人拜泉云。恁麼則不去也。宗云。是何心行。師云。我當時若見。便與撥却圓相。不唯打破南泉窠窟。亦乃教歸宗無著身處。麻谷呈伎倆不得。泉云。恁麼則不去也。果然果然。

He cited: Nanquan, Guizong, and Magu went to pay respects to National Teacher Zhong. On the road, Nanquan drew a circle and said, "If you can speak, we will go." Guizong sat down inside the circle. Magu made a woman's bow. Nanquan said, "In that case, we won't go." Guizong said, "What state of mind is this?" The Master said, "Had I seen it then, I would have wiped away the circle at once. Not only would I smash Nanquan's nest, but I would also give Guizong nowhere to settle himself, and Magu would find no way to display his artifice. Nanquan said, 'In that case, we won't go.' Indeed, indeed!"
