舉洞山到北巖。巖問。什麼處來。山云。湖南來。巖云。觀察使姓什麼。山云。不得姓。巖云。名什麼。山云。不得名。巖云還理事也無。山云自有廊幕在。巖云還出入否。山云不出入。巖云豈不出入。山拂袖出去。巖來日侵早入堂。召洞山云。昨日問上座話。不稱老僧意。一夜不安。今請上座別一轉語。若愜老僧意。便開粥相伴過夏。山云却請和尚問。巖云不出入。山云太尊貴生。巖乃開粥同過夏。師云。主張門戶。自有傍來。拱默威嚴。誰敢正視。借功施設。轉位提持。全成左右分權。不犯尊貴一路。還知尊貴處麼。寶殿無人不侍立。不種梧桐免鳳來。

He cited: Dongshan went to Beiyan. Yan asked, "Where have you come from?" Dongshan said, "I come from Hunan." Yan said, "What is the surveillance commissioner's surname?" Dongshan said, "I cannot obtain his surname." Yan said, "What is his personal name?" Dongshan said, "I cannot obtain his name." Yan said, "Does he still handle affairs?" Dongshan said, "He naturally has a staff of subordinates." Yan said, "Does he still go out and come in?" Dongshan said, "He does not go out or come in." Yan said, "Could he not go out or come in?" Dongshan flicked his sleeves and left. The next day, early at dawn, Yan entered the hall and called to Dongshan, "What I asked you yesterday did not suit this old monk's mind; I was uneasy all night. Now I invite you to give another turning phrase. If it pleases this old monk's mind, I will prepare porridge and spend the summer retreat with you." Dongshan said, "Then please ask, Venerable." Yan said, "He does not go out or come in." Dongshan said, "Too exalted!" Yan then prepared porridge and spent the summer retreat together with him. The Master said, "Taking charge of the household naturally comes from the side; hands folded in dignified silence, who dares look directly? Borrowing function to set up devices, turning positions to uphold and maintain—fully achieving the division of authority between left and right, not violating the single path of the exalted. Do you still know the exalted place? In the precious palace, no one is absent from attendant duty; not planting the parasol tree avoids the phoenix coming."
