3.64

舉黃蘗問百丈。從上相承底事。和尚如何指示於人。丈據坐。蘗云。後代兒孫。將何傳授。丈云。將謂爾是箇人。便歸方丈。師云。言滿天下無口過。行滿天下無怨惡。還他百丈。黃蘗不是不知有。且祇要此話大行。還會百丈歸方丈麼。林間風葉落。化外水天秋。

[Hongzhi] cited: Huangbo asked Baizhang, "Regarding the affair handed down from of old, how does the Master instruct others?" Baizhang sat firmly in his seat. Huangbo said, "What will later descendants transmit?" Baizhang said, "I took you for a real person!" and then returned to the abbot's quarters. The Master [Hongzhi] said, "'Words filling the world without oral error; conduct filling the world without resentment or enmity'—give credit to Baizhang. It was not that Huangbo did not know it existed; he only wanted this dialogue to circulate widely. Do you understand Baizhang's returning to the abbot's quarters? Among the forest, autumn leaves fall; / Beyond the reach of transformation, the water and sky are autumn."
