3.65

舉仰山問僧。近離甚處。僧云廬山。仰云。曾到五老峯麼。僧云不曾到。仰云。闍梨不曾遊山。雲門云。此語皆為慈悲之故。有落草之譚。師云。雲門雖然識得仰山底裡。爭柰祇知其一不知其二。且道。仰山意作麼生。無限風流慵賣弄。免人指點好郎君。

[Hongzhi] cited: Yangshan asked a monk, "Where have you recently come from?" The monk said, "Mount Lu." Yangshan said, "Did you visit the Five Old Men Peaks?" The monk said, "I did not visit them." Yangshan said, "The ācārya has not wandered the mountain." Yunmen said, "These words were all for the sake of compassion, having the discourse of entering the weeds." The Master [Hongzhi] said, "Although Yunmen recognized Yangshan's inner intent, how can one help that he only knew the one and did not know the other? And tell me, what was Yangshan's meaning? An abundance of style, too lazy to show off, / sparing that fine young gentleman from being pointed out by others."
