3.66

舉三聖云。我逢人即出。出即不為人。興化云。我逢人即不出。出則便為人。師云。墮也墮也。今日不是減古人聲光。且要長後人節概。若是本色漢。提祖師印。轉鐵牛機。把拄杖一時穿却。方見衲僧手段。

[Hongzhi] cited: Sansheng said, "When I meet someone, I immediately go out; going out, it is not for the sake of the person." Xinghua said, "When I meet someone, I do not go out; going out, it is immediately for the sake of the person." The Master [Hongzhi] said, "Fallen, fallen! Today it is not to diminish the prestige of the ancients, but to heighten the backbone of later people. If one is a fellow of genuine quality, holding up the patriarchs' seal, turning the iron ox's mechanism, and piercing through both of them at once with the staff, only then can one see the skill of a patch-robed monk."
