3.77

舉雲巖院主遊石室回。巖云。汝去入到石室裡看。為什麼便祇回。院主無對。洞山代云。彼中已有人占了也。巖云。汝更去作什麼。山云。不可人情斷絕去也。師云。低頭失却針。開眼拾得線。線無頭而莫度。針無穴以難穿。到這裏。鸞膠續絃。須是洞山始得。

[The Master] cited: The director of Yunyan returned from an excursion to the stone chamber. Yunyan said, "You went and entered into the stone chamber to see; why did you then just return?" The director had no reply. Dongshan spoke in his place: "Someone has already occupied that place." Yunyan said, "Why did you go again?" Dongshan said, "One cannot break off human feelings." The Master said, "Lowering the head, you lose the needle; opening the eyes, you pick up the thread. The thread has no end and cannot be passed through; the needle has no eye and is hard to thread. Arriving here, to mend the bowstring with phoenix glue, it had to take Dongshan."
