3.8

舉法燈開堂。謂眾云。山僧本欲跧棲巖竇。又緣清涼老人有不了底公案。今日出來。為他分析。僧問。如何是不了底公案。燈便打云。祖禰不了。殃及兒孫。僧云。過在什麼處。燈云。過在我殃及爾。師云。這僧若是箇漢。出來便與掀倒禪床。不唯自己有出身之路。亦免見祖禰不了殃及兒孫。

He cited: Fadeng inaugurated his hall and said to the assembly, "This mountain monk originally wished to crouch and dwell in a rock cave. But because the old man of Qingliang has an unsettled public case, I have come forth today to analyze it for him." A monk asked, "What is the unsettled public case?" Fadeng struck him at once, saying, "When the ancestors do not settle it, disaster extends to the descendants." The monk said, "Where does the fault lie?" Fadeng said, "The fault lies in me, bringing disaster upon you." The Master said, "If this monk were a real fellow, stepping forward he would have overturned the meditation seat. Not only would he himself have an exit path, but he would also avoid seeing the ancestors fail to settle it and bring disaster upon the descendants."
