3.82

舉良禪客問欽山。一鏇破三關時如何。山云。放出關中主看。良云。恁麼則知過必改。山云。更待何時。良云。好箭放不著所在。便出。山云且來闍梨。良回首。山把住云。一鏇破三關即且置。試與欽山發箭看。良擬議。山打七棒云。且聽。這漢疑三十年。師云。山堆嶽積來瓦解氷消法。則是人知有。與我放出關中主看。且合作麼生。有底道。當時便喝。當時便掌。然則一期瞎用則得。要且未是關中主在。還體得麼。當堂不正坐。那赴兩頭機。

[The Master] cited: The Chan guest Liang asked Qinshan, "How is it when a single turn shatters the three barriers?" Qinshan said, "Release the master within the barrier for me to see." Liang said, "In that case, knowing one's fault, one must correct it." Qinshan said, "What time are you still waiting for?" Liang said, "A fine arrow is shot, but hits no mark," and then went out. Qinshan said, "Come here for a moment, ācārya!" Liang turned his head. Qinshan grabbed him and said, "Setting aside for now a single turn shattering the three barriers, try releasing an arrow for Qinshan to see." Liang hesitated. Qinshan struck him seven blows with the staff and said, "Just let this fellow doubt for thirty years." The Master said, "Mountain-heaped and peak-accumulated, yet melting away like tiles crumbling and ice thawing—this Dharma is known to everyone. 'Release the master within the barrier for me to see'—how should one act? Some say: shout immediately, or slap immediately. Although doing so for a time in a blind fashion may pass, yet that is still not the master within the barrier. Do you comprehend? Not sitting upright in the main hall, how could one respond to the dynamics of both extremes?"
