3.81

舉僧問龍牙。如何是祖師西來意。牙云。待石烏龜解語。即向汝道。僧問香林。如何是祖師西來意。林云。坐久成勞。師云。一句子仰之彌高。一句子鑽之彌堅。一句子瞻之在前。一句子忽焉在後。還辨得麼赤心片片知人少。覿面堆堆覩者稀。

[The Master] cited: A monk asked Longya, "What is the meaning of the ancestral master's coming from the West?" Longya said, "Wait until the stone tortoise can speak, and I will tell you." A monk asked Xianglin, "What is the meaning of the ancestral master's coming from the West?" Xianglin said, "Sitting for long brings fatigue." The Master said, "One phrase: look up to it, and it grows higher. One phrase: drill into it, and it grows harder. One phrase: gaze at it before you, and suddenly it is behind. Can you still discern it? Pieces of red heart—few are those who know it; piles right before one's face—rare are those who see."
