4.10

上堂舉法眼一日坐次。忽指面前簾子。時有二僧。同去卷。法眼云。一得一失。師云。恁麼去底錯。恁麼去底親。錯時錯到底。親時親見真。相識滿天下。知心能幾人。

Ascending the hall, he cited: One day when Fayan was sitting, he suddenly pointed to the screen in front of him. At that time, two monks went together to roll it up. Fayan said: “One gain, one loss.” / The Master said: “The one who went like this was wrong; the one who went like this was intimate. When wrong, he was wrong to the very bottom; when intimate, he was intimately seeing the true. Acquaintances fill the empire, but how many truly know one's heart?”
