Ascending the hall, [he] cited: Ming'an instructed the assembly, saying: "One phrase should clarify hidden illumination; one phrase should clarify complete illumination; one phrase should clarify matching illumination. Hidden illumination does not suit the capacity; complete illumination is the path of current times; matching illumination is the body beyond things; all-clarifying is the host within host." The Master said: Matching illumination turns away completely from effort; hidden illumination has not yet crossed the world over; complete illumination does not leave behind capacity. If all of you can understand and reach such a distinct point, I grant that you are patch-robed monks with hands and eyes throughout your whole body. If not yet so, Tiantong will prick with his awl: Having angled through the blue waves, a single hook of the moon; / The moon sits low among misty trees as the boat is moored at night. / The cold rooster shakes itself and calls out for the dawn; / Smiling, it faces the spring wind and the hundred grasses' softness. / Inside and outside leisurely, / At ease both vertically and horizontally. / Master Zhi was no idle monk; / Carrying compass and ruler at the tip of his staff.
