4.125

上堂舉僧問曹山。靈衣不挂時如何。山云。曹山今日孝滿。師云。衲僧做處。脫盡功勳。超絕情量。方有出身底時節。又不免向其間指注去也。功勳密處轉身難。轉後家風又覺寬。黯黯舊山青落眼。渙然霜雪洗蓑寒。

[Hongzhi] ascended the hall and brought up: "A monk asked Caoshan, 'How is it when the spirit garment is not worn?' Caoshan said, 'Caoshan's mourning ends today.'" The Master said, "The realm where a patch-robed monk acts sheds all merit and achievement and transcends emotional calculations; only then is there the occasion to step forth. And yet, I cannot help giving an indication in between: Where merits are intimate, turning the body is difficult; / Having turned, one feels one's family style is broad again. / Dimly, the old mountains' green drops before one's eyes; / Dissolving completely, the frost and snow wash the cold rain-cloak."
