Ascending the hall upon the arrival of the posthumous letter of Venerable Cong of Yuwang, he cited: Heshan instructed the assembly, saying: 'Practicing and learning is called questioning; ending learning is called proximity. Surpassing these two is true transcending.' At that time a monk came forward and asked, 'What is true transcending?' Heshan said, 'Knowing how to beat the drum.' The Master said: Old man Heshan seized the occasion—when able to act, he simply acted. Chan Master Yuwang seized the occasion—when able to rest, he simply rested. Therefore, he did not beat this broken drum. Venerable Zen worthies! Just when letting go of the hands and walking away, tell me: where did he alight? After a good while, he said: At the shore, the aged green reeds hold snow; / On the stream, the cold, clear water holds autumn.
