上堂舉。長慶云。寧說阿羅漢有三毒。不可說如來有二種語。不道無語。只是無二種語。保福云。作麼生是如來語。慶云。聾人爭得聞。保福云。情知。爾向第二頭道。慶云。師兄作麼生。福云。喫茶去。後來雪竇道。無處有月波澄。有處無風浪起。若有人問天童作麼生是如來語。向它道。阿囉跛𮛏曩。諸禪德道。與古人語是同是別。諸人若也未會。更為劈折去也。長慶能守。保福能做。雪竇手段縱橫。天童舌頭狤獠。若也分曉會去。與爾把手共行。其或未然。各自勉力。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Changqing said, 'Better to say an arhat has the three poisons than to say the Tathāgata has two kinds of speech. I do not say he has no speech, only that he has no two kinds of speech.' Baofu said, 'What is the Tathāgata's speech?' Qing said, 'How could a deaf person hear it?' Baofu said, 'I knew well you were speaking toward the secondary level.' Qing said, 'What about you, elder brother?' Fu said, 'Go drink tea.' Later, Xuedou said, 'Where there is none, the moon appears on clear waves; where there is some, waves rise without wind.' If someone asks Tiantong, 'What is the Tathāgata's speech?' I would say to him: 'Arapacana.' Venerable Chan practitioners, tell me: is this the same as or different from the ancients' speech? If you still do not understand, I will dissect it further for you: Changqing was able to defend, Baofu was able to act, Xuedou's methods were freely traversing, and Tiantong's tongue is barbarian babble. If you understand it clearly and thoroughly, I will walk hand in hand with you. If not yet so, each of you must exert yourselves!"
