4.164

上堂舉。道吾與漸源。同往一家弔尉。源拍棺云。生耶死耶。吾云。生也不道。死也不道。見之不取。思之難到。用息而長靈。體虛而自妙。寥寥古路無人行。雪洗青山覺寒早。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Daowu and Jianyuan went together to a family to offer condolences. Yuan tapped the coffin and said, 'Is this life or death?' Wu said, 'I won't say life, I won't say death.' Seeing it, one does not seize it; thinking of it, one can hardly reach it. Function ceasing, it remains ever numinous; the essence empty, it is naturally marvelous. Deserted, the ancient path has no travelers; snow washes the green mountain, feeling the early cold."
