上堂舉灌溪問末山。如何是末山。山云。不露頂。如何是末山主。山云。非男女等相。溪喝云。何不變去。山云。不是神不是鬼。變箇甚麼。師云。非男女之相。出有無之量。透萬機之前。超三界之上。窮而通。簡而當。松含月兮夜寒。溪帶雨而春漲。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Guanxi asked Moshan, 'What is Moshan (Final Mountain)?' Moshan said, 'It does not expose its peak.' 'What is the master of Moshan?' Moshan said, 'It has no characteristics such as male or female.' Guanxi shouted and said, 'Why don't you transform?' Moshan said, 'It is not a spirit and not a ghost; what would it transform into?'" The Master said: "Without the characteristics of male or female, it transcends the measures of being and non-being. Passing beyond the myriad workings, it rises above the three realms. Exhaustive yet penetrating, simple yet apt: / The pine embraces the moon, and the night is cold; / The stream carries the rain, and the spring swell rises."
