Ascending the hall for the conclusion of the summer retreat: "Before the fifteenth day, on the head do not wear the seven-jewel crown; after the fifteenth day, under the feet snap the five-colored thread. On the head not wearing the seven-jewel crown, when sitting upright, one does not see sitting; under the feet snapping the five-colored thread, when straightaway going, one does not see going. Right on the fifteenth day, see through both ends, straightaway reaching the state where the way of ruler and minister accords, and the spirit of father and son harmonizes. In the lapis lazuli palace, the jade maiden shakes her head; before the bright moon hall, the stone figure claps his hands. Stepping back, release your hold before a ten-thousand-fathom cliff; stepping forward, turn your body atop a hundred-foot pole. Arising and ceasing, going and coming, movement and stillness, emerging and disappearing—all are gathered in this moment. The many functional essentials—releasing and holding fast—are entirely up to me. But tell me: right at such a time, what about it? Do you understand? Those who walk ahead without arriving are still deluded about themselves; having just passed the very end, one borrows function again."
