Ascending the hall, he cited: Grand Master Lu Gen asked Nanquan, "What is the Venerable's surname?" Nanquan said, "My surname is Wang (King)." The Grand Master said, "Does the King have kin?" Nanquan said, "The four ministers are not obscure." The Grand Master said, "In what position does the King reside?" Nanquan said, "Moss grows in the jade palace." A monk raised this and asked Caoshan, "What is the meaning of 'Moss grows in the jade palace'?" Caoshan said, "He does not reside in the upright position." The monk said, "What happens when the eight directions suddenly come to court?" Caoshan said, "He does not receive their salutations." The monk said, "What use is there in their coming to court?" Caoshan said, "If they disobey, they are beheaded." The monk said, "Disobedience is the affair of the ministers; I do not yet know the ruler's intent." Caoshan said, "The Privy Council does not receive the decree." The monk said, "If so, then the merit of harmonising governance falls entirely to the ministers and councillors." Caoshan said, "Do you still know the ruler's intent?" The monk said, "How could an outsider dare to deliberate on it?" The Master said: Walk delicately in the deepest places; peer intimately into hidden moments. If you can be like this, penetrating thoroughly to the root and source, engaging across and mutually interpenetrating, winding and curving through the empty and dark, you will not infringe upon the honoured and noble; the mechanism is crosswise as the shuttle passes, the needle exposed as the thread pierces through. Therefore it is said: To clarify the source within a phrase is easy; to discern the target within the source is difficult. Right at such a time, tell me: is there discernment or is there no discernment? If you say there is discernment, then it is not intimate; if you say there is no discernment, then it is not awakened. Right at such a time, how do you comprehend it? Do you understand? The Tripiṭaka elder's countenance is like jade; the myriad-year youth's temples are like silk.
