Ascending the hall upon lighting the stove, a monk asked: "What was the meaning of Danxia burning the wooden Buddha?" The Master said: "When the weather is cold, one should face the fire; bundle up in quilted robes and let things pile up as they will." The monk said: "The night is cold and the watch is deep; he burned yet another statue." The Master said: "You must take care of your eyebrows before you can get anywhere." The monk said: "Only when the entire body is red and blistered does one first become an intimate friend." The Master said: "For another's idle business, you cultivate avidyā." The monk said: "Just as for the monastery director, why did his eyebrows and beard fall out?" The Master said: "He shares the very same affliction as the venerable elder." The monk said: "Not understanding how to be a guest, he troubles the host." The Master said: "Only a fellow of genuine character can handle that method." The Master then said: "In the tenth month, northern winds and rains herald the cold; the heavenly season stirs. Today the ground stove of the monastic community is lit; sparing the wooden Buddha from being burned without consideration. Great assembly! Danxia was without consideration; how is that like the monastery director being without consideration?" The Master continued: "Originally, one ought simply to let the matter rest like that, but Tiantong cannot contain himself and will add a footnote for you all: Danxia made the best of a bad job; the monastery director's eyebrows and beard fell out. The master of the house, like one deaf and blind—though he disturbs you to death, do not hold malice."
