Ascending the hall, the Master brought up [the following]: "Layman Pang asked Great Master Ma, 'Who is the person who does not keep company with the ten thousand dharmas?' Master Ma said, 'Wait until you have swallowed all the water of the West River in a single gulp, and then I will tell you.'" The Master said: "'Swallow all the West River and then I will tell you'—Master Ma was unwilling to fall into the wild grass. The oceans of three thousand lands become autumn in one stroke; the bright moon and coral coldly illuminate each other."
