Ascending the hall on the occasion of Venerable Cong of Hongfu entering the monastery: A monk asked, "When the upright does not establish the profound, and the biased does not attach to things, how is it?" The Master said, "A pair of gold needle locks is prepared; the leaf-veined path is stable and encompasses all." The monk said, "Beyond things, riding alone on a thousand-mile elephant; beneath a ten-thousand-year pine, striking a golden bell." The Master said, "You must take yet another step to be able to manifest your body throughout the ten directions." The monk said, "When the hand points to empty space, heaven and earth turn around; on the return journey, the stone horse steps out of the gauze cage." The Master said, "Those who transcend conventions comprehend it." The Master then said: "The bright moon and reed blossoms connect on all four sides; the person who turns around boards the vessel of accord. In borrowing function, there is naturally collateral engagement; vividly at the loom, observe the upright and the biased. Therefore it is said: 'The biased does not attach to things; the upright does not establish the profound.' If one conducts oneself like this, the wondrous flowers of bodhi adorn everywhere, and wherever one abides, there is constant peace and joy."
