Ascending the hall upon arriving at Jixiang: A monk asked, "On the clear source and tranquil water, one still rows a solitary boat. Beating the drum and turning the prow, where are you going?" The Master said, "The bright moon falls into the cold sky; in the blue sky, there are no flying birds." The monk said, "If so, then I shall wash my feet and board the boat." The Master said, "How do you speak the phrase of arriving home?" The monk said, "Wait until I reach beneath the Exquisite Cliff, then I will say it to the Venerable." The Master said, "You are still separated by the ford." The monk made prostrations. The Master then said: "Light smoke is dense and thick over the patch-robed monk's home; the seasonal sights welcome spring with flourishing vigor. Flowing water and falling blossoms have infinite meaning; news of roaming the mountains is entrusted to Changsha. Remember: one day Changsha returned from roaming the mountains. The head monk asked, 'Where have you come from?' Changsha said, 'I have come from roaming the mountains.' The head monk said, 'Where did you reach?' Changsha said, 'First I followed the fragrant grasses away, and then I pursued the falling flowers back.' The head monk said, 'That is very much like the spirit of spring.' Changsha said, 'It also surpasses the autumn dew dripping on lotuses.'" The Master said: "Body and mind are as one; things and self are of the same substance. There is no need to turn the mountains, rivers, and great earth back into oneself, nor is there need to make oneself into the mountains, rivers, and great earth. Like a pearl giving off light, the light in turn illuminates itself. At all times and in all places, how can you receive and use it ready-made in such a way? Do you understand? The momentum of a thousand peaks halts beside the great mountain; the sound of ten thousand waves dissolves upon returning to the sea."
