示眾舉。龐居士問馬祖。不與萬法為侶者是甚麼人。祖云。待汝一口吸盡西江水。即向汝道。師云。吸盡西江向汝道。馬師家風不草草。截流一棹破煙寒。天水同秋清渺渺。

Instructing the assembly, [the Master] brought up: Layman Pang asked Mazu, "Who is the person who does not keep company with the myriad dharmas?" Mazu said, "Wait until you drink up the waters of the West River in a single gulp, then I will tell you." The Master said: "'Drink up the West River, then I will tell you'—Master Ma's family tradition is not sloppy. A single oar cutting across the flow breaks through the chilly mist; sky and water share the same autumn, vast and clear."
