大洪和尚忌辰上堂舉。馬祖忌日。南泉掛真燒香次。問大眾云。今日供養先師還來也無。時洞山出云。待有伴即來。泉云。雖是後生。却堪彫琢。洞山云。和尚且莫壓良為賤。師云。白雲之賓青山伴位裏。借功看互換。無底合盤轉手擎。穿心盌子通身飯。

Ascending the hall on the death anniversary of Venerable Dahong, [the Master] brought up: On the death anniversary of Mazu, as Nanquan was hanging the portrait and burning incense, he asked the great assembly, "When we make offerings to the late teacher today, will he come or not?" At that time Dongshan came forward and said, "Wait until there is a companion, then he will come." Nanquan said, "Although he is a youngster, he is indeed fit to be carved and polished." Dongshan said, "Venerable, please do not press a free person into slavery." The Master said: "Guest of the white clouds, companion of the green mountains; within position, borrowing function, observe their mutual exchange. A bottomless tray lifted by a turning hand; a pierced bowl filled throughout with rice."
