Ascending the hall at the conclusion of the summer retreat, he brought up: Dongshan instructed the assembly, saying: "At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, brothers, you go either east or west. You must go directly to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles." Tiantong says: Brothers go neither east nor west; yet you also must go to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles. Since you go neither east nor west, why do you go to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles? Do you understand? Going without going, of the same wind for a thousand miles; dwelling without dwelling, a single thought for ten thousand years. Being like this is also the merit of dwelling without dwelling, the mark of going without going. The empty valley has a spirit—tranquil yet responding; the lone cloud has no mind—moving yet at leisure. Therefore it is said: 'The Buddha's body fills the dharmadhātu, universally appearing before all living beings. Following conditions, it responds to needs without failing to be complete, yet always abides on this bodhi seat.' How can you attain such secure intimacy? Bias and upright have never left their original positions; how could unborn nature ever touch the causes and conditions of words?"
