Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "How is it when snow covers the thousand peaks?"
The Master said: "Dripping water, dripping ice."
The monk said: "Clear light coldly shines upon the eyes; the wild landscape, dazzling white, bewilders the home."
The Master said: "Where has the white ox on open ground gone?"
The monk said: "It is present."
The Master said: "Horns have grown again!"
The monk said: "Ultimately, where does it go?"
The Master said: "When turning oneself around at the base, the solitary peak is originally not white."
The Master then said: "Profoundly still and vast, brightly open and clear. Snow fills the ten directions; clouds bewilder the four directions. In the shadow of the single color, who sits in achievement? At the top of the hundred-foot pole, what are your adaptive skills? At such a time, one must discern the subtlest nuance; in such a place, one must clarify the exact truth. The white ox on open ground cannot be driven away; the fragrant elephant crossing the river can penetrate through. Seeing thoroughly to its source is like pointing to one's palm. When going completely like this, there is no Dharma to transmit; when returning like this, there is someone to understand and appreciate you. Practise!"
