示眾舉雲居問趙州。老老大大。何不覓箇住處。州云。教某甲向甚麼處住。居云。山前有箇古寺基。州云。和尚何不自住。師云。爾也恁麼住。我也恁麼住。作業相似貧相聚。十方無壁四面無門。遮醜無衣。禦寒無絮。直下不居功。箇中看轉處。采華蜂集不萌枝。臥月鳥棲無影樹。

Instructing the assembly, he brought up: Yunju asked Zhaozhou: "Being so very old, why do you not look for a place to abide?"
Zhaozhou said: "Where do you tell this person to abide?"
Yunju said: "In front of the mountain there is the foundation of an ancient temple."
Zhaozhou said: "Why does the Venerable monk not abide there himself?"
The Master said: "You abide like this, and I abide like this; our karma is similar, so poverty gathers together. The ten directions have no walls, and the four sides have no gates; without clothing to cover ugliness, without wadding to ward off the cold. Right under it, one does not dwell in achievement; examine the turning point within it. Gathering flowers, bees swarm on the non-sprouting branch; lying in the moonlight, birds roost in the shadowless tree."
