上堂。三寸舌兩片唇。無始時來賺殺人。解弄不教圭角露。阿誰參見跛雲門。僧問香林。如何是衲衣下事。林云。臘月火燒山。師云。老大叢林快說禪。不將禪拄口皮邊。谷深山遠空無像。何處人呼應不圓。

Ascending the hall: "A three-inch tongue and two lips have led people astray to their deaths since time without beginning. If one understands how to wield them without letting any sharp corner show, who would ever go study with lame Yunmen?" A monk asked Xianglin, "What is the affair under the patch-robe?" Xianglin said, "In the twelfth month, fire burns the mountain." The Master said: "An elder of the monastic grove speaks Chan deftly; he does not prop up Chan beside the edge of his lips. In the deep valleys and distant mountains, empty space is devoid of forms; where could someone call out without receiving a complete echo?"
