示眾舉清原問六祖。當何所務即不落階級。祖云。爾曾作甚麼來。原云。聖諦亦不為。祖云。落何階級。原云。聖諦尚不為。何階級之有。祖云。如是如是。師云。不落階級。卓卓超出。三際曷用安排。十方自然畐塞。五色線不我羈縻。七寶冠是誰嚴飾。

Instructing the assembly, he cited: "Qingyuan asked the Sixth Patriarch, 'What must one attend to so as not to fall into stages?' The Patriarch said, 'What have you practiced previously?' Qingyuan said, 'I do not even practice the noble truths.' The Patriarch said, 'What stages do you fall into?' Qingyuan said, 'If I do not even practice the noble truths, what stages could there be?' The Patriarch said, 'So it is, so it is.'" The Master said, "Not falling into stages, towering and transcendent. What use is there in arranging the three times? The ten directions naturally brim and fill. Five-colored threads do not entangle me; by whom is the seven-jeweled crown adorned?"
