4.39

十月旦上堂云。開爐歲歲是今朝。煖氣潛通稱我曹。可惜丹霞燒木佛。翻令院主墮眉毛。諸禪德。院主只知飢來喫飯。且不知有許多般事。丹霞只知寒即向火。亦不知有許多般事。天童門下忽有箇漢。恁麼出手。恁麼性燥。也與劈脊便打。為甚麼如此。當斷不斷。反招其亂。

Ascending the hall on the first day of the tenth month, [the Master] said: "Opening the hearth year after year falls on this very day; / The warm air subtly penetrates, suiting our assembly. / How lamentable that Danxia burned the wooden Buddha, / Causing the monastery director instead to lose his eyebrows. / Venerable Zen practitioners! The monastery director only knew to eat rice when hungry, without knowing of so many varied affairs. Danxia only knew to face the fire when cold, also without knowing of so many varied affairs. If someone under the gate of Tiantong suddenly showed such a hand and such an impatient temperament, I would strike him squarely across the back. Why so? 'Failing to sever what should be severed will bring about disorder instead.'"
