4.56

上堂舉僧問首山。如何是佛。山云。新婦騎驢阿家牽。師云。衲僧舌頭真箇自由。渾侖裏許沒錐鉤。輪扁斵工不授子。庖丁游刃無全牛。

Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Shoushan, "What is the Buddha?" Shan said, "The bride rides the donkey, the mother-in-law leads it." The Master said: "A patch-robed monk's tongue is truly free; within the undivided whole, there is no awl or hook. Wheelwright Bian's chisel-craft could not be handed down to his son; Cook Ding's wandering blade leaves no whole ox."
