Ascending the hall, he cited: Jingqing asked a monk, "What is that sound?" The monk said, "The sound of raindrops dripping from the eaves." Jingqing said, "Sentient beings are inverted, deluded about themselves and pursuing external objects." The monk said, "What about the Venerable?" Jingqing said, "I almost did not delude myself." The monk said, "What is the meaning of 'almost did not delude myself'?" Jingqing said, "To step out and manifest a body may still be easy; to shed the substance and speak of it must be difficult." The Master said: "'The sound of raindrops dripping from the eaves'—asking you to be wide awake. Directly bringing one's own affair to fruition, serving as the master along the way. In every land, seeing Buddhas; from every dust particle, rolling out sūtras. Splitting Mount Hua reveals the color connecting to the sky; releasing the Yellow River unleashes the sound reaching the sea. Just as Jingqing said, 'To step out and manifest a body may still be easy; to shed the substance and speak of it must be difficult'—how is it? Do you understand? Before the wind, it is hard to deceive the eyes of all sages; there must be a Caoshan who recognizes Jingqing."
