4.73

上堂舉僧問夾山。如何是佛。山云。此位無賓主。僧云。尋常與甚麼人對談。山云。文殊與吾携水去。普賢猶未折華回。師云。不居功不合伴。脫體其間過一遍。夢覺舡浮明月波。眼寒雪擁蘆華岸。

Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Jiashan, "What is the Buddha?" Shan said, "In this position there is neither host nor guest." The monk said, "With whom do you usually converse?" Shan said, "Mañjuśrī has gone carrying water with me; Samantabhadra has not yet returned from picking flowers." The Master said: "Not dwelling in merit, not joining companions, shedding the body within it, passing through once. Awakened from a dream, a boat floats on moonlit waves; with cold eyes, snow heaps up along the reed-flower shore."
