陽山和尚下法眷書。上堂云。祖華五葉發靈根端的知恩解報恩。大仰未忘東寺會。玄沙相繼雪峯存。機梭傳處難通路。針芥投時有妙門。鼻孔放光出氣快。當年一斵盡泥痕。只如師資相契血脈流通。恁麼時節恁麼處。所傳心手底事。作麼生體悉。良久云。脫略要看功後位。妙圓須到色前家。

On the occasion of delivering the Dharma kinship letter from Master Yangshan, [the Master] ascended the hall and said: The five petals of the ancestral flower send forth the numinous root; truly knowing kindness, they understand repaying kindness. Dayang never forgot the assembly at Dongsi; Xuansha, succeeding [to the lineage], remained at Xuefeng. Where the loom shuttle passes, it is difficult to open a road; when needle and mustard seed meet, there is a marvelous gate. The nostrils emit light, exhaling with relief; in that year, a single chop removed every trace of mud. Just as teacher and disciple mutually tally and the bloodline flows through, at such a time and in such a place, how do you experience and understand the matter transmitted from mind to hand? After a long pause, he said: In discarding [all traces], one must see the rank beyond merit; for marvelous roundness, one must reach the home before form.
