On the day of lifting the summer retreat, [the Master] ascended the hall and said: Taking Dharma as the realm, one can also be vast and penetrating, cutting off spatial boundaries. Taking wisdom as the body, one can also blend and fuse, forgetting self and other. One beneath whose rush mat roots grow, when he exhausts every single strand, then abides in the mind of non-abiding. One atop whose staff clouds arise, when he walks throughout the four continents, then acts in the marks of non-action. Like clouds, like cranes—a fellow who goes like this must know there is an 'I' before he can be honored in the guest's place. A person who gets a seat, dons the robe, and goes like this must, on the contrary, recognize 'him' to see the function within the host. Therefore the ancients said: Borrowing function to illuminate position, function resides in substance; borrowing position to illuminate function, substance resides in function. If a patch-robed monk can be like this, body and mind are singularly shed, motion and stillness are both forgotten. Clouds and water are the ācārya; the ācārya is clouds and water. Have you ever practiced like this? The goose drinking water can extract the pure taste; the bee gathering flowers does not harm the remaining fragrance.
