4.81

上堂舉僧問雲門。初秋夏末。前頭忽有人問。作麼生祇對。門云。大眾退後。師云。大眾退後妙超窠臼。不用安排。何須飣鬪。動絃別曲。孰知音。舒腸瀝膽渠開口。叢林切莫亂商量。三世諸佛不知有。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: A monk asked Yunmen, "At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, if someone suddenly comes forward to ask, how should I answer?" Men said, "Assembly, step back!" The Master said: "Assembly, step back!"—marvelously transcending the old rut. No need for arrangement, what use is displaying dishes? When the strings are plucked and the tune is distinguished, who knows the tone? Spilling out guts and pouring out gall, he opened his mouth. In the monastic grove, do not discuss it wildly; the Buddhas of the three periods do not know it exists.
