4.88

上堂云。朔風拂且吹秋過。時節薄寒宜就火。拱默威音世外遊。放閑枯木堂中坐。塵劫空時却有家。道環虛處元無我。靈靈不昧寂而知。衣鉢少林分付可。諸禪德。箇是達磨分付二祖底時節。時人且道。天童有分付無分付。良久云。人憐貧甚唯存骨。我道。機疎不惜眉。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: The north wind sweeps, blowing autumn away; in this slightly cold season, it is fitting to approach the fire. Folding the hands in silence, roaming beyond the world of Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja; taking ease, sitting in the Hall of Withered Trees. When the dust kalpas are empty, there is yet a home; where the ring of the Way is empty, there is originally no self. Numinously bright and unclouded, quiet yet aware; the robe and bowl at Shaolin could properly be handed down. Zen worthies, this was the season when Bodhidharma transmitted to the Second Patriarch. People of today, tell me: does Tiantong have a transmission or no transmission? After a long pause, he said: People pity him for being so poor that only bones remain; I say his capacity was so coarse he did not begrudge his eyebrows.
