4.89

上堂問。一點靈然不覆藏。明明老蚌夜吞光。箇時撥轉機輪也。體用由來總不妨。如何是借功明位。用在體處。師云。光在體時常湛湛。體含光處却靈靈。進云。如何是借位明功。體在用處師云。紛擾擾時常隱隱。鬧嘈嘈處却閑閑。進云。夜月有輝含古渡。白雲無雨裹秋山。師云。邯鄲學唐步。師乃云。青山不用白雲朝。白雲不用青山管。雲常在山山在雲。青山自閑雲自緩。諸禪德。若恁麼體得方知道。借功明位用在體處。借位明功。體在用處。體用無私。方乃唱道。且道。作麼生是體用無私底時節。水向竹邊流出綠。風從華裏過來香。

Ascending the hall, [a monk] asked: "A point of numinous awareness is not concealed; clearly, the old oyster swallows the light at night. At such a time, when turning the pivot of function, substance and function originally do not hinder each other. What is borrowing function to illuminate position, where function resides in substance?" The Master said: "When light is in substance, it is ever serene; where substance contains light, it is numinously aware." [The monk] advanced and said: "What is borrowing position to illuminate function, where substance resides in function?" The Master said: "In the midst of bustling confusion, it is ever concealed; in the noisy clatter, it is leisurely and calm." [The monk] advanced and said: "The night moon possesses radiance, embracing the ancient ferry; the white clouds bring no rain, wrapping the autumn mountain." The Master said: "Learning the steps of Handan." The Master then said: The green mountain does not need the white clouds to pay homage; the white clouds do not need the green mountain's control. The clouds are ever in the mountain, the mountain is in the clouds; the green mountain is naturally leisurely, the clouds are naturally slow. Zen worthies, if you can understand it like this, only then will you know that borrowing function to illuminate position means function resides in substance, and borrowing position to illuminate function means substance resides in function. When substance and function are unselfish, only then does one sing of the Way. Tell me, what is the season when substance and function are unselfish? The water flows past the bamboos, bringing out green; the wind passes through the flowers, bringing forth fragrance.
