上堂一陣清霜千峯寒色。裏許是誰看轉側。家風克紹紹非功。撫背忽驚兒脫白。所以九峯道。紹是功紹了非其功。且道。作麼生履踐。良久云。麁中辨細猶可知。細中之細復何稀。

Ascending the hall: A gust of clear frost, a thousand peaks with cold hues. Who inside there watches the turning and shifting? To inherit the family tradition, the inheritance is not merit; stroking the back, suddenly startled that the son casts off the white [robes]. Therefore Jiufeng said: 'To inherit is merit; having inherited, it is not one's merit.' Tell me, how should one tread? After a long pause, he said: Discerning the fine within the coarse can still be known; what is so rare about the finest of the fine?
