Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Clouds gather and mountains are cold; merit and effort are exhausted. The pool is empty and the moon sinks; the noble rank is hard to fathom. Right at such a time, how should one walk?" The Master said: "Illumination exhausted, the substance has no reliance; the whole body unites with the Great Way." The monk said: "Cutting off the tongue's path, not falling into dual or triple workings." The Master said: "The single phrase before words is exceedingly distinct and clear." The monk said: "The precious seal facing the wind is marvelous; layer upon layer, the brocade seams open." The Master said: "When bias and upright are not yet divided, how do you distinguish them?" The monk said: "Emptiness does not lose illumination; illumination does not lose emptiness." The Master said: "This is still the season of going and coming between bias and upright." The monk said: "When not involving bias and upright, how is it?" The Master said: "Outside the door there are clouds along the broken path; sitting without illumination is superior to lighting a lamp." The Master then said: Empty and void, cutting off all traces; a single point is unclouded. Serene and quiet, forgetting words; a single mechanism turns of itself. Śākyamuni and Maitreya at such a time dare not call themselves teachers; Bodhidharma and old Lu at such a place dare not call themselves patriarchs. Do you understand, Zen worthies? The golden needles are fully equipped with double clasps; hidden in the leaf-vein paths, it is completely embraced.
