The mind fundamentally cuts off conditions; the Dharma fundamentally has no preaching. The buddhas and patriarchs could not help but have questions, answers, and dynamic prompts directed toward the gate of secondary meaning, using them to stimulate and nudge a sort of dull fellows. Therefore Deshan said: 'In my school there are no words or phrases, nor is there a single dharma to give to people.' Fundamentally, only when each person arrives for themselves and confirms it for themselves do they have a share in speaking. Just directly clear away and wash clean the dust and defilement of delusive thoughts. If the dust and defilement are purified, it is vast and brightly gleaming, without boundary or limit, without center or edges. Round and unified, brilliantly radiant, it illuminates through the ten directions and cuts off the three periods of time. All conditions and words, upon reaching here, cannot attach even a speck of dust. Only silently knowing it oneself, spiritually shining alone, it is not different from the sages and not diminished in ordinary beings. Fundamentally, it is just this single affair of the old home; when was it ever obtained from outside? This is called the true field. A person who realizes like this can respond to the myriad occasions and enter all realms; wondrous in function and spiritually penetrating, they are naturally free of hindrance.
