The mother of Erudite Zheng Yugong was a vegetarian for fifty years. In the four postures of activity and stillness, she devoted herself exclusively to the mindfulness of Buddha samādhi, growing more diligent with age, day and night without slackening. At the age of seventy-two, on the eighth day of the eighth month at the first crowing of the cock, she passed away sitting peacefully. The Erudite wrote in detail to inform me of this matter. Now when a person is bound by old age and the bodily cocoon is about to molt, to attain sovereignty and fearlessness is the power of right mindfulness. Because no defilement of worldly affection veils the mind and no ill habit portends a realm, perfect limpidity eternally endures, empty intelligence shines alone, and the traces of dreams and illusions are completely annihilated. Therefore, as earth and water collapse and flow, and fire and wind scatter and extinguish, she stepped harmoniously into Thusness. Such an affair is praiseworthy; therefore, I speak a gāthā in praise of it.
