9.18

天童老師。未下筆之前。祖師鼻孔。一時穿却了也。事不獲已。更拈出這箇語話。當面直指。使人讀是贊無別贊。言下知歸即自贊也。見是祖無別祖。可中默契即自祖也。夫如是則正佛祖之眉目。而風彩不彰。五葉一華。隨處春色。嗚呼晝夜。孰不與祖師同起同坐一出一沒耶。仰山云。不道見。只是不別。真歇清了跋。

Before the Old Teacher of Tiantong put brush to paper, the nostrils of the ancestral teachers had already been pierced through all at once. Having no other choice, he brought forth these words again, pointing directly face to face, so that when someone reads these eulogies, there is no separate eulogy—knowing the source beneath the words is one's own eulogy; seeing these patriarchs, there are no separate patriarchs—silently tallying with them is one's own patriarch. If it is like this, then the features of the Buddhas and patriarchs are upright, yet their outward glamour is not flaunted. The five petals on a single flower—everywhere is spring scenery. Alas! Day and night, who does not rise and sit, appear and disappear together with the ancestral masters? Yangshan said: 'I do not say you saw it; it is just that there is no difference.'
